Jeez, $1,100? Kimber does make good stuff I guess. But that’s only slightly less than what I’m gonna spend when I pick up one of these bad boys -

Kinja'd!!!

(I’m going to get a .50 in 24k, I like the subtlety more than titanium gold)

And before you ask, yes I’m going to carry it in a shoulder holster. Probably only once.

My cousin owns one of those in brushed stainless. Calibre .50. Lots of gun. Lots and lots of gun.

9mm? I’ve got a Custom II in .45. Kimber makes some nice guns. And fairly reasonably priced too. It's crazy what you can spend on a 1911.

It will be completely pointless for anything other than showing off and shooting for fun (expensive fun). Honestly, I wouldn’t even risk firing it at an assailant unless we were being invaded by the Russian military or something. You could probably just beat them with it.

If you shot it at someone in public, you would likely get a double-kill on some random person. i.e. bad. It would be really bad.

Then it’s either 7+1 if that’s a full length grip, or 5+1 (or maybe 6+1) if it’s a short grip.

A normal one is $1,200. Gold is ~$1,600. Really the ammo is the most expensive part. It’s like $1.50/round (doesn’t sound expensive, but it is when you compare it to like 9mm at ~50 cents a piece)

There’s a Smith & Wesson .500 for sale at my local shop. That thing is like a freaking rifle. It’s ludicrous.

Me and my buddy actually talked about how one of the best home defense weapons against your usual unarmed junkies would be a crossbow. No one will try to break into your house if they see a guy come running out with a few of these going through his shoulder -

On those big wheel guns, as long as the barrel’s not longer than four inches... Otherwise, they’re just dumb, even for a mountain gun. For home defense, .38 spl hollow point is ideal. Chief’s special revolver.

Oh yeah the .38 spl hollow point is the best home defense (and usually is plenty for an EDC), but I’m saying if it’s a practical situation where you can use one, a crossbow will make nobody want to fuck with you ever again. I would say that an arrow wound may even be better, because if the perp escapes it’d be very hard to cover up an arrow sticking out of your torso and very painful to just rip it out.

Yeah. Ten rounds of ACP is a lot. Personally, I think five or six is good in most self defense situations because in the unlikely event that you ever have to present the firearm, zero rounds will probably do the job. And hopefully, if you have to fire, you’ll be firing and not spraying and praying.

Yeah, all of my pistols are antique collectibles. I have a Luger, an old .380 semi(no idea what make), and a .45 long colt. It'd be funny to get my C&C and carry a .45 long colt...not exactly a small gun.

.45 cases are huge and that’s a compact, so it’s 7+1 unless it’s a double stack, which I don’t think Kimber makes. Para Ordnance does, but if you want capacity you might as well go 9mm and have 18-20 rounds.

Kinja'd!!! LOREM IPSUM > Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo

I respectfully disagree.

The increased trigger pull of a double action revolver often causes a major loss of accuracy.

Granted, if you’ve already got the hammer back then the first shot is at a much reduced pull, and in such a situation the first shot is the most important (because if you’re firing at them they must pose an imminent threat and must possess equal or greater force for your shoot to be justified in most areas.)

Problem is, if they are also armed with a firearm and your first shot does not disable them they may be able to return fire, at which point the increased trigger pull and loss of accuracy may put you at a significant disadvantage... Especially in the gravest extreme, under duress and while full of adrenaline.

A quality .45 or .40 chambered with a semi jacketed hollow point is the way to go for home defense IMHO.

Not sure if your saying that because you are familiar with the Pistol, or you are just assuming. I'm not familiar with this particular pistol, but 10+1 is certainly possible. My Glock is a 10+1 and I have a Springfield Armory that is 12+1. Considering the length of the grip, I might be willing to buy that it is a 10+1... again lacking any particular knowledge of this Pistol.

Just went to practice with my dad this weekend - had a chance to put five rounds through his S&W500. God damn is that a fun gun to shoot. Almost guaranteed to be the biggest thing at the pistol lanes. I would not recommend one if you’re not very social - everyone has questions about it. Also, ammo is expensive at around $2.50-$3.50 a shot, but it’s not as bad as .32 Stevens.

1911's are fun to shoot, and have so much cool factor, but carrying “cocked & locked” scares the hell out of me, as does the super light trigger they all try for. I will own one someday, but not soon, and i doubt I’ll ever carry it.

TL;DR - I’m familiar with Kimber pistols as I’ve got one.

I’ve got a Kimber Custom II which is the big brother of the Carry II series of Kimbers. The Custom II and the Carry II models are all single stack 1911* pistols which in a full size pistol means 7+1** capacity. Some of the Carry pistols have a short barrel with a full sized grip while some have a shortened grip as well. They are all single stack, so 7+1 is the largest capacity they can have.

Glock pistols are generally double stack, which leads to significantly higher capacity, as are the XD/XDM series of pistols which I’m assuming your Springfield Armory pistol is

Round size also has a big effect on capacity. The .45 ACP is a pretty big round, especially when you stack it up next to a 9mm which is very common in double stack pistols.

Kinja'd!!!

* The Kimbers aren’t true 1911 pistols as they have improvements/modifications/variations, but they are close enough that everyone except pedants refers to them as 1911's.

** Wilson Combat makes some magazines that allow for 8 round capacity in a standard size magazine.

The vast majority of folks are entirely untrained in handling their firearms safely, except for the boxes of rounds they throw downrange at the community range. My suspicion is that in the preponderance of cases in which a homeowner actually presents the handgun, they will accomplish the job with zero shots fired.

Recently, there was a noise in the street that aroused me from sleep. I stumbled over to the bedroom window to see what was going on and I couldn’t see a thing, not least, because I hadn’t donned my eyeglasses. To think of picking up a handgun and subsequently using it effectively is a rather daunting prospect. In my case, choosing between the Chief’s Special, the 4-inch Model 66 in .357 magnum, or the compact Glock in .45 ACP would slow me down, after hoping that I’d gotten the gun safe open on the first try. I’d probably grab the Chief because it is so manageable. Then again, I’ll probably win the lottery sooner than I’ll have to fend off an invader of my home, so the point is almost moot.

Boils down to what you’re most comfortable using, it seems to me. Sword, dagger or dirk?
